The Baron is UNB Saint John’s student-run newspaper. It publishes 6 issues a semester, covering campus life and news from around the community, the country, and the world. The goal of The Baron is to provide the student population of UNBSJ with a paper that is both relevant and interesting. The Baron provides students who are interested in journalism, publishing, and media relations with invaluable hands-on experience. There are many benefits to working at the paper, including the opportunity to improve campus and community life, gaining exposure to new social and technical skills, and practical experience in journalism and publishing. Working for the student newspaper is the cheapest academic course on campus!

The Baron is an equal opportunity organization which strives at all times to create a positive work environment where everyone is welcome. The Baron is always looking for interested student journalists and columnists to cover a wide variety of topics ranging from Local to International News, Sports, and the Arts. Students participating in The Baron have access to free media workshops featuring local news agencies. These events take place at various times through the year and provide students with the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques from established members of the Saint John media community.

Our Mission:

Our mission is to provide the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of UNBSJ with a newspaper they can be proud of. As a student newspaper the role of The Baron is to provide alternative media coverage that focuses on issues that are overlooked in the mainstream media. Having said that, The Baron is a publication that believes that although a student newspaper can and must at times be irreverent, it can never afford to be irrelevant. Its content must strive to meet the interests of a diverse university community.

The staff at The Baron work hard to provide an interesting, fun, and discrimination free working environment where full and part time students feel welcome. All students are encouraged to participate in the creation, production, and distribution of the paper.
