Certified Management Accountants Information Table Brains have two sides for a reason. Certified Management Accountants use both sides. The CMA program teaches students to become senior leaders, capable of driving the direction of companies, rather than simply reporting financial results. CMA New Brunswick and UNB Saint John offer an MBA/CMA which combines the broad business skills acquired in an MBA degree with the accounting expertise and professional skills of the CMA designation, thereby creating a unique and distinctive edge for graduates of the program. The MBA/CMA program offers the opportunity to obtain two credentials in a shorter timeframe and at a reduced cost than if the program elements were taken separately. For more information on the CMA professional designation and the MBA/CMA program please drop by our booth in the Ward Chipman Library near the Tim Hortons on Wednesday, November 18, 2009. If while visiting the booth you become a CMA University Student Member you will be entered in a draw for a free iPhone and 3 years service!

Computer Science & Applied Statistics Research The Computer Science & Applied Statistics Dept. will host Jonas Laurila Bergman, Dept. CSAS of UNB Saint John, discussing “The SAMBO System for alignment and merging of terminological resources.” Abstract The creation and reuse of thesauri, controlled vocabularies and domain specific ontologies is now commonplace. Many such ontologies contain overlapping information requiring terminology mapping and alignment in order to establish consistent and dependable terminological resources. Alignment and merging of ontologies is an emerging discipline within the field of Semantic Web technology. This presentation will showcase the SAMBO system for alignment and merging of ontologies from the biomedical domain and the Kitamo system for evaluation of different ontology alignment strategies. Computer Science & Applied Statistics Research Talk The Computer Science & Applied Statistics Dept. will host a research talk with Jake van der Laan, Dept. CSAS at UNB Saint John, discussing “Detecting Online Investment Scams.” Abstract In the last few years, law enforcement agencies in Canada have noted the increased use of websites in the perpetration of investment scams. This observation led to speculation that perhaps there were ways to detect such sites using machine learning and web mining methodologies. This presentation will outline proof of concept system developed to facilitate online fraud detection. Moreover it will address experiences in developing this system, demonstrate its current capabilities and review a number of the challenges encountered in the development of the prototype. A number of examples of successfully identified scam websites will be presented. Future refinement and improvement of the system in the context of the current state of research into website classification and online deception detection will be discussed.
